UNICEF PNG Violence

Designing a multisectoral SBCC Strategy for the prevention of violence against women, girls and children in Papua New Guinea.

Violence against women, girls, and children in Papua New Guinea has developed into a widespread and intractable challenge in the past two decades. Although there has been significant research and effort in tackling the problem, family violence has continued find deeper behavioural roots behind patriarchal power structures, rationales of tradition, and tensions linked to the changing social fabric of many communities. In 2021, we at ThinkPlace were engaged by UNICEF Papua New Guinea to undertake research and design work to understand key behavioural drivers of family violence and design a national social and behavioural change strategy. Not wanting to simply repeat previous work, ThinkPlace took a pragmatic approach in seeking to understand existing approaches, why their impacts have been limited, and designing behavioural research approaches that sought to understand how a different approach might result in different outcomes. This work has resulted in a completed National Strategy to End Violence against Women, Girls and Children that has been accepted by national and regional Government bodies.
