Designing a training course for UNICEF Programme Officers to learn skills and emotional, cognitive and technical tools to design, implement, and measure social norms change programmes.
Looking to increase the ability of Programme Managers to identify, understand, and respond to the social norms that impact their work, UNICEF ESARO engaged the ThinkPlace team to design and deliver an innovative training practice. With a focus on harmful practices, in particular child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sexual and gender-based violence, the course introduces participants to the foundations and characteristics of well-designed social norms change programmes. Rather than simply delivering information, our team designed emotive, cognitive and content journeys for learners, which used adult learning principles and behaviour change theory to maximise engagement and participation in the course. Further, lessons and theory are supported be a range of case studies, hypothetical examples, and activities to engage and challenge learners, bringing the content to life and making it applicable to their work. The course, which has been launched in both in-person and online formats, has been received positively and is currently being used by UNICEF and partners.
